Check Out Tabia Kuntz’s Story

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a teen I always struggled with finding jeans that were long enough for my extremely long legs. To no avail, I had to continue to wear my regular jeans which on me were considered “high waters”. I remember I would try to “sag” my pants off of my waist just a little bit so my jeans could appear longer. I was always self-conscious about my height and I remember at times I would even begin to slouch with the hopes that I would blend in with the other girls. As I got older, I began finding sites that would accommodate the length that I needed. I found that an inseam of 34 inches is where I finally began to feel comfortable in my jeans. So that was one problem solved! On occasion, I would go shopping with my friends and they would be able to buy all the new popular jean styles and I would always feel left out. I could only buy my jeans in certain stores or online and they were always really plain and basic with no style or flare to them. As time went on, I found more places to shop online for my jeans but that came with even more struggles. I had to deal with inconsistent sizing, high prices, and limited availability. I finally decided enough was enough. I decided I would start my own line that would solve every struggle that I had ever experienced with jeans. Now, approximately one year later, I tested the market with a soft launch and the official website is launching November 2020. I am so excited to launch my new baby Taboo denim and can’t wait to help all of the tall girls like myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as relatively smooth road?
November 18th is the day that I started my journey as an entrepreneur with hopes to create a denim line for tall girls. The process was going really smooth, in fact, too smooth. I had a feeling I would hit a snag eventually. That snag was COVID19. The manufacturers that I was in communication with had their factories shut down due to Covid19. A few months went by and I waited patiently until the factories resumed normal operations. During those months, I learned that a celebrity would soon be launching a jean line for tall girls as well and at that point I became really discouraged. However, if it wasn’t for my friends and family encouraging me and keeping me focused, I would have likely given up on my dream.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Previously, I was an exceptional student education teacher that taught students with developmental disabilities and severe behaviors. I fell in love with this population so I am pursuing my Master’s in Education concentrating in Applied Behavior Analysis. Currently, I am a Student Advocate with the City of Orlando that serves at-risk youth in the community. I enjoy working with the youth in a mentor-ship capacity that allows me to give back the knowledge and the skills I have learned. I am most proud of the work I have done to help students overcome their circumstances by graduating high school and becoming first generation College students. My drive to problem solve and my will to always go above and beyond will always set me apart from others.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During Covid-19 I have learned that timing is everything. It is all about the “right” timing, because things don’t happen until they are supposed to happen. Throughout Covid19, I had to have patience and trust the timing of my process. Although I am launching a business within the pandemic the timing of flourishing black businesses is NOW!
