Inspiring Conversations with Patty Castellanos of The Expression Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Castellanos.

Hi Patty, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From early in my college days, I knew that psychology was only the beginning. I was very involved with research studies and programs surrounding women’s issues. After completing my Master’s program in 2008 and then becoming licensed, I was driven to open a practice focused on supporting women.

In 2011, I became pregnant and gave birth to my son. I was uneducated in birth and how the mind and body works in birthing, so I just followed along with what I was told. In doing this, I did not learn how the birthing body worked, to trust the birthing process and my body, and ended in a series of interventions that culminated in a cesarean section. This changed my outlook on birth and motherhood. My life changed and this became my reason for the launch of my private practice. After that experience, I saw how important it was for women and mothers to prepare mentally, emotionally and physically through pregnancy, as they shifted through the motherhood journey and into postpartum.

This led me to my true passion, my work that really doesn’t feel like work, as I support women and mothers through their challenges and struggles as they discover themselves through pregnancy and adjust to motherhood in postpartum to meet their goals. As an experienced counselor, I became certified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist because I found it to be an extremely effective method for creating lasting change. I knew of the power of the subconscious mind to bring about powerful shifts in thinking and releasing what doesn’t serve them.

My work and passion as a mother and professional guided me to learn how a natural Vaginal Birth After Cesarean, better known as VBAC, was possible for healthy mothers and healthy babies with a supportive care provider. In 2014, I became pregnant and put to practice all the research I had done. As I prepared for this birthing experience, I took a HypnoBirthing class. In 2015, my little family was completed with my daughter, who was born via VBAC, using HypnoBirthing. Little would I have known that the life-changing tools would be a part of my practice just five years into the future, as I became certified as a HypnoBirtrhing Childbirth Educator.

This was a powerful journey of healing, learning and growth. My family is my passion, not a 9-5 job. For this reason, my passion is transferred to working with mothers every day who choose to put their motherhood journey and healing as their priority because being a happy and healthy mom is a priority. I am incredibly passionate about what I do because I believe that each person, each mother, has a story to tell; their story does not define them; rather, they define their story because they are greater than their story…

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been an easy road, but it has certainly been a fulfilling one. Motherhood has its challenges and it’s a full-time job. It was important to be a present mother to my children as they grew and to give the best of me to my clients in my practice. Managing my time and commitments as a therapist and mother has been a very delicate journey, as I honor my practice, my family, and most importantly myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Pregnancy can be one of the most beautiful and challenging times in a woman’s life. So many challenges, uncertainties, fears, doubts and stress can come up during pre-conception, pregnancy, the baby’s birth and postpartum through the motherhood journey. As a hypnotherapist and therapist, I provide the tools and techniques to help mom through the entire process every step of the way. Through private individual service, including specialized hypnotherapeutic methods, I guide my clients to break through unconscious patterns of thoughts and behaviors to live their lives authentically. The prenatal and postpartum support groups and motherhood motivation groups support and challenge women and mothers to move through their struggles to meet their goals in a like-minded community where they feel safe and understood.

I pride myself in using my experience and training to help mothers meet their birthing goals through VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) Workshops and HypnoBirthing classes, as I empower moms to release past birth trauma, doubts and limiting beliefs to build their confidence. Each woman should believe that their mind and body are working together to inspire the mother they envision being. I would like every woman to know that they are not alone and they can heal from past trauma, experiences and challenges to move into the best version of themselves as they move through their motherhood journey.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I love to laugh! I find that using humor as part of the therapeutic process reduces stress and improves the connections between myself and those I work with. When we find opportunities to laugh, its grounding and allows us to see things for what they are, lighten the load and allows it to release and flow… and this is a skill that can carry anyone through life situations. Therapy doesn’t have to be hard; it can be fun, relaxing, and releasing.
